Top tips for your Campervan trip to Canberra
Canberra’s climate is pretty friendly - but summer can crank up the heat, and winter mornings can get crisp. Spring and Autumn are just right for motorhome rental in Canberra, especially if you are after lots of outdoor adventures. Layers are your friend, and suncream is a must, even when it's cloudy (trust us).

Best Campervan routes from Canberra
Canberra to Snowy Mountains
Head south from Canberra, taking the Monaro Highway through farmland and friendly small towns. We recommend stopping at Cooma, full of boutique shops selling antiques and handmade crafts. As you carry on west into the Snowy Mountains, the landscape changes into an Alpine paradise. When you hire a campervan in Canberra, you can take your time driving through the hills. Once you arrive, breathe in that fresh air, park up your campervan and enjoy the fantastic views.
Canberra to Blue Mountains
This 290km road trip takes you through the Aissue countryside with a few stops. After you rent a campervan in Canberra, stop at Goulburn for a little pit stop. This is where you will find Australia's famous golden sheep statue, where we think selfies are mandatory. Where else can you get a picture taken with a sheep statue? After that, the roads turn very scenic as you head towards the Blue Mountains. Make another stop at the town of Taralga for coffee or lunch. As the roads get nearer the mountains, the scenery becomes more dramatic, with eucalyptus forests and steep cliffs. Once you arrive, you can hike or just enjoy being there.
Canberra to Melbourne
This is the biggest road trip on our list (660km); this time, it's heading to another city rather than the outdoors. When you rent a motorhome in Canberra, the drive here is excellent, cruising through the classic countryside where views stretch forever and kangaroo sightings become the norm. About halfway, stop at Albury-Wodonga, a twin city on the town of the New South Wales-Victoria border. Another famous is Glenrowan, famous for Ned Kelly and his gang. We wouldn't recommend driving right in the centre of Melbourne, parking outside and getting a bus in (it's less stressful).
Sites of interest and excursions in Canberra
Mount Ainslie Lookout
This makes a great place to visit before you head out. It just gives you a great lookout over the city. The drive up to the top is campervan-friendly but scenic enough to feel like an adventure. If you are feeling energetic, you can park at the bottom and walk up. Getting to the top at sunset makes watching the sun go down extra special.
Australian National Botanical Gardens
If you love nature, then the Australian National Botanical Gardens are a must-visit. It's full of plants and wildlife. You can walk through colourful displays of wildflowers, check out the colourful birds or just relax in the garden cafe.
Lake Burley Griffin
Lake Burley Griffin is a man-made lake and a local favourite hang-out place. It's a good place to check out before your campervan journey, and it gives you a real sense of what Canberra is all about.
