Maui Beach, Christchurch, written on 13 days ago

We had a Maui Beach from Christchurch to Auckland in November 2025. The vehicle was over 3 years old, which we only noticed during the rental. Maui advertises vehicles that are no more than 2.5 years old. The engine had around 80,000 kilometres on it. The vehicle was very damaged on the outside, scratched and patched with synthetic resin. The interior was still in good condition. The refrigerator was very old and was certainly not the original refrigerator. It defrosted very often, even though we were regularly connected to shore power. The camping equipment inside was really good. Good bed linen. The camping chairs were okay, but the camping table was very old and rickety. Given the very high price, I expect a top-of-the-range vehicle. Therefore, the price-performance ratio is absolutely not right for me. I might as well rent an old, cheaper vehicle. That's why I don't recommend Maui.

Maui Cascade, Christchurch, written on about 1 month ago

Campervan in decent condition. Very warm welcome in Christchurch for check-in. However, terrible reception in Auckland for drop-off (I should point out that we had no particular issues). Staff were very casual... Check the levels: the waste water tank had not been emptied.

    Hiking
Unless you want to hike in the summer, we recommend you aim to rent a campervan in Christchurch during spring, sometime between September and November, as the temperatures are milder without being too cold or rainy.

If you intend on spending a lot of time at the beach, it is best to rent a motorhome in Christchurch during summer. Be aware that this is also the busiest time of the year for the beaches, so you will have to cope with more people than at other times.

Best campervan driving routes from Christchurch

Christchurch to Queenstown
The best way to use your motorhome rental in Christchurch is to take advantage of the many beautiful driving routes you can try. Below are a few of the most popular to consider for your trip.

Christchurch to Queenstown
When you are short on time and want to try and experience as much of the impressive South Island as possible, take a short route from Christchurch to Queenstown. Start the route in Greymouth, a little seaside town, then travel southwards along NZ’s rugged coastline, stopping at the Fox and Franz Josef glaciers, marvelling at their majesty before travelling down through the mountains towards Queenstown. This entire part of the South Island is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, so every bend, corner, turn, ascent and descent will allow you to be in awe of nature.

Christchurch South Loop
If you have more time to explore the South Island thoroughly, take the Christchurch South Loop. Enjoy the rich variety in the passing land, from rugged coast to windy, pristine beaches and then glaciers and mountains. Look out for Lake Tekapo and the Southern Alps as key parts of this journey.

Christchurch North Loop
What about a journey that takes you through more winding roads and introduces you to more of the wildlife NZ is famous for and its wine? From Christchurch, head along the northern loop, taking in the seafood cuisine delights of Kaikoura, the very northernmost tip of the South Island, Marlborough Sounds, and make sure you visit Nelson Lake before going on an adventure around Abel Tasman National Park.

Sites of interest and excursions in Christchurch

Arthur’s Pass National Park, South Island
Arthur’s Pass National Park was the first in South Island when it opened in 1929. It covers around 1,185 square kilometres of predominately mountainous terrain. You will find exciting animals like Who, Kakariki Karaka, Kea, Great Spotted Kiwi and Weka.

Banks Peninsula, Christchurch
This beach has been there for over 6 million years, when two volcanoes violently erupted, and the resulting craters became the harbours of Akaroa and Lyttelton. The entire part of the coast covers around 1,150 square kilometres. There are several bays across Banks Peninsula where you can stop to worship the sun, catch a tan, or participate in various water-based activities.
