Helpful tips for your trip to Berlin

Like most European cities, the best time to rent a motorhome in Berlin is between May and September. The weather is warm and pleasant, and no one wants to take a campervan holiday in the rain. However, Berlin can be busy, so you might choose April or October, either side of the peak months. There will be fewer tourists, and the roads will be less busy.

  You might think of Berlin as being all built up, but you would be wrong. The city's parks, such as Tiergarten and Treptower Park, provide perfect places for picnics, jogging, and leisurely walks. For water activities, head to Wannsee Lake to swim or boat.

  Berlin might not have food that's as exciting as other parts of Europe, but there are some great dishes you should try. We recommend currywurst, schnitzel, and pretzels. What its food might lack, it makes up for with beer, as it brews some of the best in the world.

Best Campervan routes around Berlin

Berlin to Potsdam
This is the shortest route on the trip, as it's only 35km outside of Berlin and might be perfect if you only have a camper van for hire in Berlin for one night or don’t want to travel too far. It could also be a good stop-off if you are heading somewhere further the next day. Potsdam is the capital of Brandenburg and is known for its palaces and gardens, such as Sanssouci Palace and Park, which are UNESCO World Heritage sites. The scenic drive takes you through forests and lakes, making it a relaxing and beautiful journey.

Berlin to Spreewald
Head southeast from Berling towards Lübbenau, the gateway to Spreewald. The drive is about 110km in total and offers a mix of scenic beauty and culture. Once you arrive in Spreewald, there's plenty to do. It's known for its network of canals, villages, and green landscapes. We recommend renting a kayak or taking a boat tour to explore the waterways. Don’t forget to try the local delicacy—Spreewald pickles.

Berlin to Mecklenburg Lake District
This is one of the most popular areas to head to if you have a campervan in Berlin. Mecklenburg Lake District is an amazing place with over 1,000 lakes, forests, and lots of little towns dotted along the lakes. It's very popular with those who love the outdoors, as you can go swimming, boating, hiking, or even hire a bike. Müritz National Park is a highlight of the area. In total, the drive is about 150km, but it's one that you won’t forget. 

Places of interest and excursions in Berlin

Peacock Island (Pfaueninsel)
About 30km southwest of Berlin, Peacock Island is a stunning nature reserve in the River Havel. It's known for its peacocks (hence the name). While you're here, explore the castle, walk through the gardens, and enjoy being in nature.

Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp
This might not be everyone's choice, but it's a significant historical site and a reminder of what happened during World War 2. The Nazis used it, and now serves as a museum.  You can take guided tours and read personal stories about what happened here. Visiting Sachsenhausen provides a sobering glimpse into history and is an essential educational experience.

Müggelsee Lake
Müggelsee Lake is on the outskirts of Berlin (about 25km east), and it's a great place to enjoy the outdoors. It's a good place for walking, cycling, or birdwatching. There are places to rent a boat, or you could hike up the Müggelberge hills to get a good view of the area. This could make an excellent first stop after hiring your campervan and heading out of the city.
