Valuable Tips for Your Trip to Lyon

Lyon is good all year round, but the best time is from April to June and Autumn from September to October. This is because the summer months can be very hot (it's hard to sleep in a hot campervan), and the summer period can be hectic. It depends on what you want from your campervan holiday, but motorhome rental in Lyon is good any time of the year.

Best campervan routes around Lyon

Lyon to Chambéry and Annecy

A journey of about 150 kilometres. Head east out of Lyon on the A43 towards Chambéry. This drive will take you through the hône-Alpes region, offering fantastic views over mountains and valleys. Your first stop on this route is Chambéry, an old medieval town full of charm and character. After that, carry on your journey towards Annecy, often called the Venice of the Alps due to its canal network and crystal clear lake. Check out Château d'Annecy while you are there, walk around the lake and enjoy the outdoors. Afterwards, you could head back to Lyon or into the French Alps.

Lyon to Avignon and Provence

This is a longer drive, about 230km in total. Always remember that you have to drive 230km back as well. Head out of Lyon on the A7 motorway and stop at Avignon. It's a city known for its Roman influence and town squares. Grab some food, shop, and then return to Provence in the campervan. Follow the signs to Avignon, another medieval city full of character. Park on the outskirts of the town, if you can, as driving in the centre is hard work. You are then just outside the Provence area, where you can choose where to explore next, as you will be spoilt for choice.

Lyon to Montélimar and Vallon-Pont-d'Arc

This 160-km journey takes the A7 motorway out of Lyon towards Montélimar, famous for its nougat. It's a good place to stop and an excellent excuse to pick up something to eat in that region. After a quick stop, carry on towards Vallon-Pont-d'Arc, where you will find the Ardèche Gorges with absolutely stunning landscapes. When you pitch up around here in your campervan, you will know that you have made a good choice, as this area perfectly suits a campervan and outdoor lovers.

Best excursions and sites of interest around Lyon

Château de Cormatin

If you head about 90km out of Lyon to the Burgundy region, you will find Château de Cormatin. This beautifully restored Renaissance castle showcases France's rich architectural and cultural heritage. It's an excellent place to head to in the campervan and a great day out for everyone, as the drive here is also lovely. It's also perfect to visit when you rent a motorhome in Lyon.

Parc Naturel Régional du Pilat

Campervan hire in Lyon is all about enjoying the outdoors. Parc Naturel Régional du Pilat is about 60km away and will only take an hour or so. It's a great place to be at one with nature and enjoy the outdoors. Our tip would be to prepare a picnic and park somewhere in the park for the day. You can’t stay here overnight; you must stay at an official campsite.

Perouges

On the outskirts of Lyon is the town of Perouges, which sits high up on a hill overlooking the Ain River. It's often referred to as one of France's prettiest villages, so we had to include it on our list. When you walk around here, it's like going back in time, and it feels like you are in a living museum, as many of the buildings are from the 14th and 15th centuries.

Parc des Oiseaux

Parc des Oiseaux is a bird watchers' paradise. It is home to over 3000 bird species and is one of the largest bird sanctuaries in Europe. This is a perfect place to visit if you have children in the campervan, as there are bird shows, and it's an excellent educational experience.
