Johannesburg to Kruger National Park

Johannesburg to Golden Gate Highlands National Park
Golden Gate Highlands National Park is one of the country's most underrated national parks. The drive here is roughly 320km, easily driven in a day. The drive will take you through farmland and winding roads, sometimes making you question whether you are still in South Africa. Along the way, stop at the town of Clarens and pick up a bite to eat. Once at the Golden Gate, find a designated campsite and wait for that glowing gold at sunset and sunrise.

Johannesburg to the Drakensberg Mountains
The Drakensberg Mountains look like something out of the Lord of the Rings, which makes it the perfect destination for a road trip. It's a 350km drive to get here. The drive is along the N3, which takes you through lovely countryside. Once you drive through the Drakensberg Mountains, you’ll take pictures every 2 minutes and wonder why this place isn’t higher up on most people's South African road trips.

Cradle of Humankind
The Cradle of Humankind is roughly 1 hour outside of Johannesburg and is one of the most important fossil sites on the planet. You will find some of the oldest human remains ever discovered here. Take a guided tour and see where they are still digging up new finds. Even if you think this isn’t your thing, we recommend you visit it because it's a lifetime experience.

Soweto & Vilakazi Street
This is where South Africa’s past meets its present and is somewhere everyone should visit during their time in the country. Vilakazi Street was once home to Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu. You can go inside Mandela's former home, which is now a museum, giving you a look into his life. Soweto itself is full of street markets, music and some fantastic food.

Melville Koppies Nature Reserve
Melville Koppies Nature Reserve is right on the edge of Johannesburg and is a welcomed break from the city noise. It's an ancient ridge of rocky hills that has been around for millions of years, and it makes you see what Joburg looked like before skyscrapers took over. There are hiking trails around the area, and it's a good place to get some photographs for Instagram.
