Top tips for your Campervan trip to Colorado
Colorado’s high elevation can take some getting used to, so if you’re looking for a camper van for hire in Colorado, keep that in mind for the first few days, stay hydrated, and avoid overexertion. This is especially important if heading to Leadville, the highest city in the U.S.
- DrivingWhen you rent a motorhome in Colorado, it comes with a few things to keep in mind. In the mountainous areas, you will come across steep grades with winding roads, especially on Independence Pass or Trail Ridge Road. Take your time on these roads and use lower gears where possible.
- Family Friendly-ActivitiesCheyenne Mountain Zoo in Colorado Springs (the highest zoo in the country) should be on your list. Garden of the Gods in Colorado Springs is another good choice, as well as Dinosaur Ridge, where you can see real-life dinosaur footprints.
- The OutdoorsColorado’s outdoors is a campervan traveller's dream for anyone looking for motorhome rental in Colorado. It goes without saying that the Rocky Mountains are a must-visit. If you head south, Grand and Dunes National Park is another good choice for sandboarding. Crested Butte, known as the wildflower capital of Colorado, is great in the summer when the flowers are out.
Campervan offers for couples in Colorado
For a romantic trip for two exploring Colorado and other cities nearby, a smaller motorhome is just right. Discover our selection of vehicles for two people and explore together.

Best Campervan routes from Colorado
Denver to Aspen via Independence Pass
Begin your adventure with a motorhome for hire in Colorado, starting in Denver, before heading west into the Rocky Mountains through majestic landscapes. Your first top could be at Leadville, which, as we mentioned earlier, was the highest city in North America. Here, you can look into Colorado’s past, and it's a good place to stretch your legs and grab a coffee. After that, you will drive along Independence Pass, a high-altitude road with lakes, meadows and breathtaking views. Stop at one of the laybys and take a few pictures. Once you arrive in Aspen, take a walk through the town's boutique galleries, or if you are feeling energetic, explore one of the hiking trails.
Colorado Springs to Mesa Verde National Park
This 550km journey starts in Colorado Springs through dramatic landscapes, including the peaks of the San Juan Mountains, where the road goes through scenic valleys alongside the river. Stop at Pagosa Springs, known for its hot springs and small-town charm. As you approach Mesa Verde National Park, the landscape reveals mesas and canyons, which will be different from the mountains you left behind. Take a guided tour of the park, where you’ll learn about the history, culture and ingenuity of the people who built these structures.
Boulder to Steamboat Springs
This 260km road trip is perfect for those looking for campervan hire in Colorado. It passes through rolling foothills, picturesque ranches and winding mountain passes, making it a journey you will never forget. On the way, stop at the small town of Lyons for a coffee or something to eat at a local cafe before passing through Medicine Bow-Routt National Forests. As you approach Steamboat Springs, the landscape opens up to reveal the slopes of Mount Werner. Steamboat is a very campervan-friendly town with plenty of campsites that offer a great view of the mountains.
Sites of interest and excursions in Colorado
Hanging Lake
Hanging Lake is tucked away in Glenwood Canyon, perched high on the cliffs and surrounded by lush greenery and waterfalls. It almost looks too beautiful to be real. If you hire a campervan in Colorado, it's a place we recommend you check out. Reaching the top involved a steep 2.5km walk that climbs through the canyon, but the final view of Hanging Lake and Spouting Rock Falls is worth every step.
Royal Gorge Bridge and Park
It is an awe-inspiring attraction that combines views and attraction. The Royal Gorge Bridge is one of the highest suspension bridges in the world, at over 290 metres above the canyon floor. Walking over it gives you a great perspective of the gorge, with panoramic views stretching for miles. Along with the bridge are gondola rides and a zip line that goes over the canyon for those who want an adrenaline rush.
Maroon Bells
The Maroons Bells, just outside of Aspen, are an iconic destination for Colorado residents. These twin peaks, reflecting in the waters of Maroon Lake, are a photographer's dream. The Maroon Lake Scenic Trail is perfect for a nice walk, or you could take the Crater Lake Trail for a more challenging adventure.
